Act :- 1
Scene :- (i) The scene opens in the street of Venice, with Antonio, a merchant of Venice, talking to his friends. He tells them that he is very sad at heart but he does not know the cause of his sadness. But Antonio forgets all about his sadness in the company of his best friend, Bassanio who discloses his heart before him and tells him that he has fallen in love with Portia, a rich lady of Belmont. He wants to win her hand but he is short of money. Antonio tells him that he can borrow loan from someone on his credit.
वेनिस की सड़क से दृश्य खुलता है जहां वेनिस का एक व्यापारी एंटोनियम अपने मित्रों से बात कर रहा होता है। वह उन्हें बताता है कि वह मन से बहुत उदास है लेकिन अपनी उदासी के कारण को नहीं जानता है। लेकिन वह अपनी सारी उदासी के बारे में भूल जाता है जब वह अपने सबसे अच्छे मित्र बैसनियों से मिलता है जो अपने दिल की बात उसके समक्ष उजागर करता है और उसे बताता है कि उसे बेलमांट की एक धनी महिला पोर्शिया से स्नेह हो गया है। वह उसे पत्नी के रूप में पाना चाहता है लेकिन उसे धन की कमी है। एंटोनिया उससे कहता है कि वह किसी से भी उसके उधार या नाम पर कर्ज उधार ले सकता है।
Scene :- (ii) Portia and Nerrissa have been shown talking about their private life. Portia tells Nerrissa that she has enough wealth but no peace of mind. She has no freedom in the choice of her life partner. Her father has left behind a strange will. According to it she has to marry the person who chooses the right casket. Nerissa tells Portia that her father’s ‘Will’ will certainly help her in getting a good life partner. Portia tells her that she has already given her heart away to Bassanio.
पोर्शिया और नेरिस्सा अपने निजी जीवन के बारे में बात करते हुए दिखाई देती है। पूर्णिया नेरिस्सा से बताती है कि उसके पास पर्याप्त धन है लेकिन मन में शांति नहीं है। उसे अपना जीवन साथी चुनने की स्वतंत्रता नहीं है।उसके पिता पीछे एक विचित्र अवश्य छोड़ गए हैं जिसके अनुसार उसे उस व्यक्ति से विवाह करना पड़ेगा जो सही संदूक का चुनाव करेगा। नेरिस्सा पोर्शिया को बताती है कि उसके पिता की वसीयत निश्चित रूप से उसे एक अछा जीवनसाथी प्राप्त करने में मदद करेगी। पोर्शिया उससे बताती है कि उसने पहले से ही अपना दिल बैसनियों को दे दी है।
Scene :- (iii) Bassanio visits Shylock, a jew money lender. He wants to borrow from him three thousand ducats on behalf of Antonio. Shylock, who charges too much interest from his borrowers and hates christians specially Antonio, is very glad for he would get a chance to take revenge from Antonio. He puts two conditions to loan money to Antonio – 1. He will lend him three thousand ducats for three months without any interest. 2. If he fails to refund the loan in time, he will charge one pound of flesh from any part of his body. Bassanio warns Antonio not to sign the bond but Antonio is confident about the timely return of his merchant ships and refund the loan. So he agrees to Shylock’s proposal.
Bassanio एक यहूदी साहूकार Shylock से मिलता है वह उससे 3000 ducats एंटोनियो की तरफ उधार लेना चाहता है। साईंलॉक जो कि अपने से उधार लेने वालों से बहुत अधिक ब्याज दंडित करता है और ईसाइयों से घृणा करता विशेष रूप से Antonio से, साईं लॉक बहुत प्रसन्न होता है क्योंकि उसे एंटोनियो से बदला लेने का एक अवसर मिल जाएगा। वह एंटोनियो को धन कर्ज देने की 2 शर्ते रखता है – १. वह उसे 3000 ducats बगैर ब्याज के 3 महीने के लिए उधार देगा। २. यदि वह समय से कर्ज़ को लौटा देने में असफल हो जाता है तोवह उसके शरीर के किसी भी भाग से 1 पाउंड मांस दंडित करेगा। Bassanio एंटोनियो को चेतावनी देता है अनुबंध पर हस्ताक्षर न करने को लेकिन एंटोनियो को अपने व्यापारिक पानी के जहाजों के समय से लौटने का और कर्ज को लौटा देने का विश्वास होता है इसलिए वह Shylock के प्रस्ताव से सहमत हो जाता है।
Act :- 2
Scene :- (i) The prince of Morocco is one of the suitors of Portia. He requests Portia not to reject him for dark complxion because he is youthful and strong. Portia advises him to wait for the right moment.
मोरक्को का राजकुमार पोर्सिया के चाहने वालों में से एक हैं। वह पोर्सिया से अनुरोध करता है कि वह उसे उसके सांवली रंग के कारण इंकार न करें क्योंकि वह युवा और मजबूत है। पोर्सिया उसे सही समय की प्रतीक्षा करने का सलाह देती है।
Scene :- (ii) Launcelot Gobbo is the son of Old Gobbo. He is in the service of Shylock. He tells his father that he has decided to leave Shylock and serve a new master named Bassanio. At once Bassanio comes there and accepts his wish. Bassanio is ready to go to woo the hand of Portia. He takes Gratiano with him as per his desire but on the condition that he would keep his tongue under control before Portia.
Launcelot Gobbo, Old Gobbo का पुत्र है। वह Shylock की सेवा में है अर्थात Shylock का नौकर है। वह अपने पिता को बताता है कि उसने Shylock को छोड़ने का और एक नए मालिक जिसका नाम Bassanio है उनकी सेवा करने का निर्णय लिया है। उसी समय Bassanio आता है और उसकी इच्छा को स्वीकार कर लेता है। Bassanio, Portia से विवाह करने के लिए जाने के लिए तैयार होता है। वह ग्रेसियानो को उसकी इच्छा पर अपने साथ ले लेता है लेकिन शर्त रखता है कि वह अपनी जुबान को पोर्शिया के समक्ष नियंत्रण में रखेगा।
Scene :- (iii) Launcelot goes to Shylock’s home and takes a heartly farewell from Jessica. She requests him to do her a favour by passing on a private letter to her lover, Lorenzo. She makes up her mind to run away with Lorenzo and marry him against the wishes of her father.
Launcelot, Shylock के घर जाता है और जेसिका से तहे दिल से विदाई लेता है। वह अपने प्रेमी लोरेंजो को एक निजी पत्र आगे बढ़ा देने की कृपा करने के लिए उससे अनुरोध करती है। वह इरादा कर लेती है लोरेंजो के साथ भाग ने की और अपने पिता के इच्छाओं के विरुद्ध उससे विवाह करने की।
Scene :- (iv) Launcelot comes to Lorenzo and gives him the letter of Jessica. Lorenzo asks him to tell Jessica to reach the decided place at the appointed time. Launcelot goes away to invite Shylock to the dinner at Bassanio’s place.
Launcelot, लोरेंजो के पास आता है और उसे जेसिका का पत्र देता है। लोरेंजो उससे कहता है जेसिका को बताने के लिए कि निश्चित समय पर निणित किए गए स्थान पर पहुंचने के लिए। Launcelot, Shylock को Bassanio के घर शाम के भोजन के लिए आमंत्रित करने के लिए चला जाता है।
Scene :- (v) Before going to the dinner at Bassanio’s place Shylock hands over the keys of his house to Jessica. He warns her to keep all doors and windows closed and also not to look at masqueraders.
शाम के भोजन के लिए Bassanio के घर जाने से पहले Shylock अपने घर के चाबीयों को जेसिका को दे देता है। वह उसे सभी दरवाजों तथा खिड़कियों को बंद रखने का और जुलूस वालो को ना देखने का चेतावनी भी देता है।
Scene -: (vi) Lorenzo comes late to join the masqueraders. Jessica sees him and comes down in a boy’s dress to join the masquerade. She hands over to Lorenzo caskets containing ducats and previous stones.
Lorenzo जुलूस वालो से जुड़ने के लिए देरी से आता है। जेसिका उसे देख लेती है और एक लड़के के कपड़े में उस जुलूस से जुड़ने के लिए नीचे आती है। वह लोरेंजो को कीमती रत्नों तथा ducats भरे हुए संदूको को दे देती है।
Scene :- (vii) Here Portia appears with the prince of Morocco. He is led to open the three caskets. He reads the inscriptions on three caskets one by one and finally chooses the gold casket. He finds an empty human skull in it. He goes away disappointed on his failure.
यहां पोर्शिया मोरक्को के राजकुमार के साथ दिखाई देती है। उसे तीन संदूको को खोलने के लिए ले जाया जाता है। वह एक-एक करके उन तीनों संदूक ऊपर लिखे हुए अभिलेखों को पढ़ता है और अंत में सोने के संदूक को चुनता है। वह इस इसके अंदर एक खाली मानव खोपड़ी को पाता है। वह अपनी असफलता पर निराश हुआ चला जाता है।
Scene :- (viii) Shylock is shocked at the elopement of her daughter with Lorenzo. He moves to the duke to search them but fails.
Shylock अपनी पुत्री के लोरेंजो के साथ भाग जाने पर स्तब्ध रहता है। वह उनकी तलाश के लिए के duke के पास जाता है लेकिन सफलता नहीं मिलती है।
Scene :- (ix) The prince of Arragon arrives to woo Portia. He also reads the inscriptions painted on the caskets and finally chooses the silver casket. He finds there the figure of a blinking idiot. He goes away with heavy heart.
Arragon का राजकुमार Portia से विवाह करने के लिए आ पहुंचता है। वह भी उन संदूको पर छपे अभिलेखों को पड़ता है और अंत में चांदी के संदूक को चुनता है। वह एक पलक झपकते मूर्ख के तस्वीर को वहां पाता है। वह भारी मन से चला जाता है।
Act – 3
Scene :- (i) Shylock informs Salarino that Antonio has lost everything and become a bankrupt. He now thinks how he will take a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body as the penalty of the bond! Just then Tubal comes and informs that he could not search Jessica and Lorenzo. Shylock curses his daughter and tells Tubal to engage a lawyer to excute against Antonio for the failure of the bond.
Shylock सैलेरिनो को सूचित करता है कि एंटोनियो सब कुछ खो चुका है और एक दिवालिया हो गया। अब वह सोचता है कि कैसे एंटोनियो के शरीर से अनुबंध के जुर्माने के रूप में एक पाउंड मांस कैसे लें। ठीक तभी ट्यूबल आता है और सूचित करता है कि वह लोरेंजो तथा जेसिका की तलाश नहीं कर सका। Shylock अपनी पुत्री को बुरा भला कहता है और ट्यूबल को एक वकील को अनुबंध की असफलता के लिए Antonio के खिलाफ करने के लिए कहता है।
Scene :- (ii) Bassanio reaches Belmont and expresses his desire to choose the casket. Portia remains in suspense. Bassanio chooses the leaden casket. He finds the portrait of Portia in it. Portia is overjoyed at his success. At the time Salarino comes with an urgent letter. Bassanio comes to know about Antonio’s condition and mischief of Shylock. Portia asks him to go to help his friend.
Bassanio बेलमंट पहुंचता है और संदुक चूनने की अपनी इच्छा प्रकट करता है। Portia संदेह में रहती है। Bassanio कांच के संदूक को चुनता है। वह पोर्शिया के तस्वीर को इसमें पाता है। Portia उसकी सफलता पर अति प्रसन्न हो जाती है उसी समय Salarino एक जरूरी पत्र के साथ आता है । Bassanio एंटोनियों की दशा और सायलॉक के शरारत के बारे में जान जाता है। Portia उसे उसके मित्र की मदद करने के लिए कहती है।
Scene :- (iii) Shylock is firm to take a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body. People try to convince him to leave his unjust demand but he does not listen to any body.
साईं लॉक एंटोनियो के शरीर से एक पाउंड मांस लेने के लिए दृढ़ रहता है।लोग उसे विश्वास दिलाने का प्रयास करते हैं इस अनुचित मांग को छोड़ देने के लिए लेकिन वह किसी का नहीं सुनता।
Secne :- (iv) After the departure of Bassanio to Venice. Portia and Nerissa put on male dresses and leave the house in the charge of Lorenzo and Jessica.
Bassanio के वेनिस विदाई के बाद Portia और Nerissa पुरुष के वस्त्रों को धारण करती हैं और लोरेंजो तथा जेसिका की देखरेख में घर को छोड़ देती हैं।
Act – 4
Scene :- (i) Duke tries to convince Shylock to change his mind and take more money, but Shylock stays firm at his words mercilessly. At the time Portia appears in the court as a young lawyer appointed by Dr. Bellario. She makes an appeal to Shylock to be merciful to Antonio. When he denies, she asks him to take a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body but he will neither shed a single drop of blood nor he will cut more or less than a pound of flesh. Shylock is stunned. He does not know what to do! Now he demonds money but Portia tells him that he will get nothing but justice. Since he has conspired against the life of a noble gentle man, he will lose half of his property to the government and other half will go to Antonio.
Duke, Shylock को विश्वास दिलाने का प्रयास करते हैं कि वह अपने मन को बदल ले और अधिक धन ले ले लेकिन Shylock अपने शब्दों पर निर्दयता से अड़ा रहता है। उसी समय Portia डॉक्टर बलेरियों द्वारा नियुक्त एक युवा वकील के रूप में दरबार में दिखाई देती है। वह Shylock से एंटोनियो के प्रति दयावान होने का अनुरोध करती है लेकिन जब वह इंकार कर देता है तो उससे कहती है एंटोनियो के शरीर से एक पाउंड मांस लेने को लेकिन वह रक्त का न तो एक बूद प्रवाहित करेगा और न ही एक पाउंड मांस से कम या अधिक काटेगा। Shylock स्तब्ध हो जाता है वह नहीं जान पाता कि क्या करें। अब वह धन की मांग करता है लेकिन पोर्शिया उससे कहती है कि उसे न्याय के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं मिलेगा क्योंकि उसने एक श्रेष्ठ सज्जन पुरुष के जीवन के खिलाफ षड्यंत्र रचा है वह अपनी आधी संपत्ति सरकार को देगा और दूसरा आधार एंटोनियो को मिलेगा।
Scene :- (ii) Bassanio offers three thousand ducats to the young lawyer but she takes a pair of gloves from Antonio and demands Bassanio’s wedding ring. Both Portia and Nerissa chalk out a plan to reach Belmont before their husbands. Gratiano comes and gives Bassanio’s ring to Portia. Nerissa also tries to get a ring from Gratiano. Both Portia and Nerrissa make up their minds to pick up a quarrel with their husbands over the parting of rings and the betrayal of their trust.
Bassanio उस युवा वकील को 3000 ducats की पेशकश करता है लेकिन वह एंटोनिया से एक जोड़े दस्ताने Bassanio के विवाह की अंगूठी की मांग करती है। Portia और Nerissa दोनों अपने पतियों से पहले बेलमेंट पहुंचने की योजना बनाती हैं। ग्रेसियानो आता है और Bassanio की अंगूठी को पोर्शिया को दे देता है। Nerissa भी ग्रेसियनो से एक अंगूठी प्राप्त करने का प्रयास करती है । Portia और Nerissa दोनों ही अपने पतियों से अंगूठी के खो जाने और उनके विश्वास को तोड़ने के लिए अपने मन में झगड़ा करने का निर्णय कर लेती है।
Act – 5
Portia and Nerissa enter their house. After a few hours, Bassanio, Antonio and Gratiano also arrive. Now Nerissa and Portia demond their wedding rings from their husbands. They reply that they have given their rings to the young lawyer and his clerk. Both quarrel with their husbands but finally give them the ring back. Portia discloses how she disguised herself as a lawyer and saved Antonio’s life. At the time a news comes that Antonio’s ships are safe. The mistry is solved and every body is happy in the end except Shylock.
Portia और Nerissa अपने घर में प्रवेश करती हैं। कुछ घंटों बाद Bassanio, एंटोनियो और Gratiano भी आ पहुंचते हैं। अब Nerissa और पोर्शिया अपने विवाह की अंगूठी अपने पतियों से मांगती हैं। वे उत्तर देते हैं कि वह अपनी अंगूठियों को उस युवा वकील और उसके क्लर्क को दे दिए हैं दोनों अपने पतियों से झगड़ा करते हैं लेकिन अंत में अंगूठी उन्हें वापस दे देती हैं Portia उजागर करती है कि कैसे वह अपने आप को एक वकील के रूप में वेश बदली और एंटोनियो के जीवन की रक्षा की। उसी समय एक समाचार आता है कि Antonio के पानी के जहाज सुरक्षित हैं। रहस्य सुलझ जाता है और हर कोई अंत में प्रसन्न रहता है सिवाय Shylock के।

Qu. 1 Give the character – sketch of Bassanio.
Ans. – Bassanio leaves the least favourable impression on the mind of readers. He is youthful, smart, intelligent and fortune hunter friend. Bassanio’s character reveals the following qualities –
1. A true lover :- Bassanio falls in love with Portia at the very first sight and finally he gets her as his wife.
2. A fortunate friend :- Bassanio is the most fortunate because he has a friend like Antonio who endanger his life for him without thinking anything.
3. A smart youth :- Bassanio is smart and youthful that is why he easily wins the heart of rich and beautiful Portia.
4. A waster of money :- Bassanio spends money without any hesitation. He is a waster of money. He spends money on gifts of rich and beautiful ladies. He does not know the value of money.
5. A contemtible character :- In the begining he may be regarded as the most contemptible character. He appers as a man whose main of life is to live on the money of others.
Qu. 2 Give the character sketch of Shylock.
Ans. Shylock has many negative points. He is greedy fellow, a heartless cruel man. Some features of Shylock’s character are given below –
1. A rich jew :- Shylock is a rich jew. He gives his money on loan and takes high interest rate. That’s why he became the richest moneylender of Venice.
2. Heartless and cruelman :- Shylock is heartless and cruelman. He loves only one thing that is money. Every emotion is worthless to him. He lacks humanity.
3. A jealous man :- Shylock is jealous and pretender man. He hates Antonio but when he comes to borrow money, he pretends courtesy and modesty.
4. A man wrongly seen :- This is true that Shylock is evil, malicious and greedy. But he is not a thief or smuggler. He is not anti-social man. What he does with Antonio, that is because of his commercial and communal jealousy. Otherwise he does nothing against law.
5. An evil genius :- Shylock is infact an evil genius. He reveals his reality when he is all alone.
Qu. 3 Give the character sketch of Antonio.
Ans. Antonio is the real hero of the play ‘The Merchant Of Venice’. Some of the striking features of his character are given below –
1. A rich merchant of Venice :- Antonio is very famous and rich merchant of Venice. He has a number of ships.
2. A true friend :- Antonio is devoted, unselfish and loyal friend. He takes loan for his friend Bassanio and endangers his life.
3. A kind hearted person :- Antoniois always ready to help others. He gives money to the needy without charging any interest.
4. A man of sweet temper :- Antonio is a sweet tempered and soft spoken person. He does not offend anyone. He is good and gentle to all.
5. A true christian :- Antonio is a communally biased person like all other christians. He has deep rooted hatred for all the jews specially for Shylock.
6. A pessimistic man :- Antonio is a pessimistic philosopher. He regards the world as a stage where everyone must play a part.
Qu. 4 Give the character sketch of Portia.
Ans. In the play ‘The Merchant Of Venice’ Portia is the most important character of Shakespeare. She is very beautiful. She plays an important role in the play. We find the following main point in her character :
1. Her beauty :- Portia is a very beautiful lady. Her suitors the prince of Morocco, the prince of Arrogon and Basanio were very impressed by her beauty.
2. Her personality :- Portia has so many qualities in her personality. She has both masculine and feminine qualities. Boldness, intelligence, kindness, mercy nd loyaty all these qualities, we can see in Portia.
3. Straight forward :- Portia is straight forwrd lady. In the trial scene, she delivers a beutiful and attractive speech on mercy.
4. A perfect woman :- Portia is a perfect woman. She possesses in herself all the virtues. Her heart is full of kindness and mercy.
5. Self confident lady :- Portia is a lady of self confident. She defeats Shylock in the court with the help of self confident.
6. Dutiful :- Portia is a dutiful lady. She has a strong sense of duty and honour.
Qu. 5 What reasons does Shylock give for hating Antonio?
Ans. Shylock says that Antonio has ill treated him in many ways. He always scold him for his business of money lending. He calls him ‘a mean cruel dog’, ‘a disbeliever in Christianity’ and ‘an irreligious man’. He hates Antonio because he is a christian and he lends money without charging any interest on it. This badly affects his business.
