9. (a) Change any one of the following into indirect form of speech :

Indirect – My father asked me why I was so eager to the picture that day.

Indirect – He exclaimed with surprise that it was a great chance.

(b) Combine one of the following sets of sentences as directed within the brackets:

(i) The deer was caught in the net. He struggled hard to escape. (Simple Sentence) 

Simple – Having been caught in the net, the deer struggled hard to escape.

Simple – In spite of being poor, he was respected by all the people of his village.

(d) Correct any four of the following sentences :

Correct – It is the same watch as I purchased today.

(ii) He has gone to Mumbai yesterday.

Correct – He went to Mumbai yesterday.

(iii) Myself can do it. 

Correct – I myself can do it.

Correct – Your claim is prior to your sister’s.

11. Translate the following into English :

भारत के पवित्र धार्मिक साहित्य में आध्यात्मिक उन्नति के लिए भारत के ऋषियों, महर्षियों तथा विद्वानों ने जो नियम निर्धारित किए हैं, वे संसार के इतिहास में अद्वितीय हैं । भारत का साहित्य हरिश्चन्द्र, युधिष्ठिर तथा दशरथ जैसे महापुरुषों के चरित्रों से भरा पड़ा है जिन्होंने सत्य की वेदी पर अपने जीवन की बलि दे दी थी । उन्होंने स्वार्थ की भावना का पूर्ण रूप से परित्याग कर वास्तविक सभ्यता के द्योतक ‘ वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ‘ के उच्च सिद्धान्त को अपना लिया था । यह वह समय था जब भारतवर्ष समस्त संसार को न केवल अपनी धार्मिक तथा आध्यात्मिक शिक्षाओं द्वारा अपितु विज्ञान, कला – कौशल तथा उद्योग – धन्धों द्वारा उपकृत करता था । भारतीय विद्वता का पौधा, जिसको प्राचीन विद्वानों ने अपने परिश्रम से सींचा था, आज दिनों – दिन सूखता जा रहा है ।

The literature of India is is full of great characters like Harishcandra, Yudhisthira and Dashratha, who sacrified their lives at the altar of truth. They had embraced the higher principle, ” The world is a home for all “, the symbol of the real civilization by giving up the feeling of their selfishness fully. It was the time when India used to oblige the whole world not only by her religious and spiritual powers but also by her arts, skills and industries. The plant of Indian scholarship which was grown by the toil of ancient scholars is getting dry day per day.
