Instruction – First 15 minutes are related to the candidates for reading the question paper.
Note – (i) This paper is divided in section-A and section-B. Both the sections are compulsory.
(ii) Question No. 11 has three parts. I, II and III. Attempt only one part of question No.11.
(iii) All other questions are compulsory.
(Section – A)

1. (a)Reference : These lines have been taken from the lesson ‘A Fellow Traveller’ written by A.G. Gardiner.
Context : In these lines A.G. Gardiner compares his journey in the train with the course of his own life. He also finds common points between the life of the mosquito and his own life.
Explanation : The writer says that the mosquito does not know anything of its journey in the train. In the same way A. G. Gardiner also does not know anything of the journey of his own life. He finds that living beings are just like shadows. They disappear any time any day. The mosquito comes from the dark into the lighted carriage,flies around the light for some time and again goes out into the dark of night.
(b) Reference : These lines have been taken from the lesson ‘A Girl with a Basket’ written by William C. Douglas.
Context : The author was very much impressed by the appearance of a little refugee girl. In these lines he describes the girl and narrates her actions.
Explanation : there was a crowd of refugee children selling baskets. But the author was impressed by a little girl of nine years who is stood just in front of him. She looked beautiful. Her attempts were quite strong as a seller of her basket. Her basket was quite pretty to look at. It had a handle too. She wanted to sell the basket for one and a half rupee. It was about thirty cents in American currency. She made powerful appeals to him so that he might buy her basket. She looked very poor. There were tears in her eyes. The author’s heart was moved by the pitiable requests of the girl.
2. (a) We should learn to work without worry to secure good health.

4. (a) ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is an extraordinary comedy of Shakespeare. In it, almost all the romantic elements can be visible. Its pages are sparkling with new salient features and wisdom, beauty and bliss; vice and virtue; love and laughter; emotions and imaginations etc. Suspense and satisfaction are fairly scattered here and there. Love of Portia with Bassanio and love of Nerissa with Gratiano arouse our emotions and passion. The mad love of Jessica with Lorenzo is also the centre of our attraction. In the ring episode Bassanio gives the ring to her that he will put the ring be safe in his finger forever. Like this, on the other hand ,Narissa had given a ring to Gratiano with the same promise. This is also a very comedy idea of the play. Jessica is the daughter of the Shylock. Before elopement ,Lorenzo and Jessica represented the two opposite sides that is
very funny.
(b) Portia is certainly and undoubtedly the most fascinating and powerful character of Shakespeare. Her splendour overshadows all other characters of the play even it is often said that Shakespeare has only heroines but no heroes. She is rich, beautiful,wandrous, noble minded, highly intelligent, witty, bold and sound in judgement.
A creature of Light and Beauty : She is the most wonderful amongst all the heroines is Shakespeare because she is a creature of light and beauty .
Her High Education : She is highly educated. She knows many languages as Latin, French, Italian etc. She knows legal matters too.
Her Beauty : She is so beautiful that many rich young men want to win her hand.
Bold and Strong : Though she is lonely and parentless; and though she is delicate like a lily yet she is bold and strong.
5. (a) The astrologer gave an advice to the stranger that he should catch the next rain and go to his village. He would further said that he should never come out of his home village or else he would be in a great danger.

He is unaffected by false flattery.He does not care for his ruin. His enemies can get nothing by his loss. Such a person gets true happiness .
Context : Here the poet tells us some qualities of a truly happy man.

11. English Translation – It was a dark night. It was 12 o’clock clock. Dogs were not barking also. I was in sound sleep. I awoke suddenly hearing a loud sound. I saw that all people are running towards one side. Some people were carrying water. Some were carrying dust. Some people had taken sticks in their hands and some were going empty hands. I could not understand for some time what is the matter. I laid on cot. After some times I saw the smoke and light in the sky. It is known that a house caught fire and all people had ran away.

1. Introduction :- We all know the popular saying “Health is Wealth”. By health we don’t mean the absence of physical troubles only. But it is a state of complete physical ,mental and social well – being. The loss of health is a loss of happiness.
2. How to Preserve Health :- Following things are necessary to preserve health.
(a) Important of Light, Air and Water :- Good health depends on several things. Fresh air and sunlight are very important for our health. Fresh air helps us to improve our immune system and overall health. So a morning walk is very useful for health .
Sunlight helps our body to produce vitamin D. A dirty atmosphere cause lots of diseases. Fresh and put drinking water is also necessary for good health.
(b) Food :- Food is another necessary thing for the body. Nutritious foods helps us to maintain good health .Consumption of healthy foods help us to minimize and health related problems.
We should always include a portion of green vegetables, fruits or salads in our meal. Green vegetables are sources of vital nutrients. Our digestive system plays a key role in our overall health.
(c) Physical Exercise and Sports :- We know the proverb, “A sound mind in a sound body”. In order to keep the body healthy, we need to keep the mind sound.
Physical exercise keep us fit. There are different kinds of physical exercises.
3.Conclusion :- If you follow the above important rules of health, you will never be unhealthy, you will always happy and good healthy.
