The quality of mercy is not strain’d;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes;
दया का गुण दबाव से उत्पन्न नहीं होता है। यह ठीक मनुष्य के हृदय में उसी प्रकार उत्पन्न होता है जैसे आकाश से साधारण वर्षा की बूंद नीचे पृथ्वी पर गिरती है। यह दोहरा वरदान है। यह दया दिखाने वाले तथा दया ग्रहण करने वाले दोनों को लाभ देता है।
‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
यह सबसे शक्तिशाली व्यक्तियों का सबसे शक्तिशाली गुण होता है। यह सिंहासन ग्रहण किए हुए राजा को उसकी मुकुट की अपेक्षा अधिक शोभा देता है।
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and mejesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
उसका राजदंड सांसारिक शक्ति के बल को दिखाता है जोकि भय तथा वैभव का प्रतीक होता है जिसमें राजा का भय तथा डर बना रहता है।
But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
लेकिन दया का गुड इस राज्य दंड के शासन से बढ़कर होता है या राजाओं के हृदय में निवास करता है।
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
When mercy seasons justice.
यह अपने आप में एक ईश्वरी गुण होता है और सांसारिक शक्ति सबसे अधिक ईश्वरी शक्ति के समान दिखाई देने लगती है जब दया का गुण न्याय से मिल जाता है।

It can not be forced. It is like gentle rain on the earth below. It is also a double blessing. It blesses both the giver and the receiver. It suits the king better than his crown. The crown of the king shows wordly power. Mercy shows moral and spiritual power. It is a quality of God. Earthly power becomes God-like when mercy is mixed with justice.
