About the Poet – Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most famous poets of India. He was born in Kolkata on May 6th, 1861. He was educated mostly at home. He was won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1931. He had a great insight in the understanding of human life. He diet in 1941.
About the Poem – In this poem, Rabindranath Tagore expresses his love for Indi. So he describes what type of country he wants and prays to God likewise. This poem is an extract from his famous work Gitanjali a collection of short poems.

Stanza – 1 Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
(रविंद्र नाथ टैगोर ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते हैं कि ईश्वर मेरे सपनों का भारत ऐसा हो) जहां लोगों के मन में कोई भय न हो और लोग आत्म सम्मान के साथ सिर ऊंचा करके रहते हो। जहां ज्ञान के प्रति कोई रोक-टोक न हो अर्थात् शिक्षा सभी के लिए स्वतंत्र हो। जहां यह मानव समाज छोटे-मोटे घरेलू दीवारों जैसे जाति, धर्म, भाषा से टुकड़ों टुकड़ों में न बटा हुआ हो। जहां शब्द सत्य की गहराई से निकलते हो अर्थात् जहां कोई झूठ न बोलता हो।

Explanation – In this stanza, the poet prays God to make his country full of happiness. He prays God that his countrymen should live in free atmosphere from fear and they feel themselves proud and full of respect. Everybody should be free in getting knowledge and in using his reasoning power. Society should not be divided into small sections on the narrow basis of religion, caste and language. They should be true to everyone.

Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where The mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action
Into that Heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.
(रवींद्नाथ टैगोर ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते हैं कि मेरा सपनों का भारत ऐसा हो) जहां पूर्णतया की प्राप्ति के लिए लोग लगातार प्रयास कर रहे हो। जहां लोग तर्क करने की स्वच्छ जल धारा को छोड़कर पुराने आदतों के आदि न हो गए हो अर्थात् जहां लोग नए तर्क को अपनाते हो। जहां मस्तिष्क ईश्वर की कृपा के द्वारा सदैव ही विस्तृत विचारों और कार्यों की ओर अग्रसर हो। स्वतंत्रता के ऐसे स्वर्ग में, हे मेरे पिता, मेरे देश को जागृत करें।
