The Ganga rises from the Himalayas. Generally it flows towards the south – east. Having covered a long track, it falls down into the Bay of Bengal. The Ganga flows through mountains upto Rishikesh but after this it comes down the fields. The Yamuna, its tributary , merges with it in Allahabad . In the winter the Ganga turns to be a narrow stream but in rainy season it overflows its banks. Many other rivers also rise from Himalayas. But the people give the greatest importance to the Ganga only. The Hindus worship it. In the west of the Ganga, the Yamuna also rises from the Himalayas but it takes parallel course. The Ganga flows through Haridwar and Rishikesh. The Yamuna flows through Delhi and Agra.
